The Fairfax Open Space Committee was founded three years ago to preserve open space in and around Fairfax. The committee was key in acquiring a pristine nine-acre redwood grove, home to spotted owls, in Cascade Canyon.
The Committee’s goals include saving natural lands for recreation and wildlife corridors and linking our town’s open spaces with existing Marin open spaces wherever possible. We are working in collaboration with other groups in an effort to acquire, for open space, 100 acres of beautiful ridgeline property with meadows and woods that overlooks the northern borders of our town.
Our third annual benefit on April 21st is to help raise awareness and funds for these projects, which will preserve our beautiful natural environment for future generations.

Heidi Kuhn was deeply inspired in September 1997 to create an organization dedicated to the eradication of landmines worldwide. The Task Forces of the Social Justice Center will give brief reports, and current board members will be introduced. We hope to have new board members to introduce and vote on as well. Our newly founded Advisory Board will be welcomed and introduced also.

5:30-6:50 PM UNTIL WHEN An intimate in-depth portrait of Palestinian lives today.
7:00-7:30 PM THIS IS NOT YOUR WAR is the poignant testimony of Lynn Gras, an American nurse volunteer, who was giving training in neonatal intensive care in Palestinian hospitals under siege during the Israeli attacks on Gaza and Ramallah in May of 2002. We follow Lynn as she travels through the occupied territories, negotiating checkpoints and encountering many dangers along the way. A brief history of the region is interwoven with the narrative.

Thursday, April 5
4:00-5:00PM REFUSENIKS Though from very different backgrounds, the two Israeli soldiers in our story refusie to participate in the cycle of violence and hatred between Israelis and Palestinians. They are among 500 Israeli Reserve Officers who have signed a letter refusing to serve against the Palestinians

5:30-6:40 PM HIJACKING CATASTROPHE: 9/11, Fear and the Selling of American Empire places the Bush Administration’s false justifications for war in Iraq with the larger context of a two-decade struggle by neo-conservatives to dramatically increase military spending in the wake of the Cold War, and to expand American power globally by means of force.

7:30 - 9:30 pm — MPJC PRESENTS:
7:30 - 8:50 pm IRAQ FOR SALE: The War Profiteers (75 minutes) Muckraking director Robert Greenwald compiles a catalog of greed and corruption among private contractors in Iraq, focusing primarily on Halliburton, Blackwater Security Consulting and CACI International. The film traces connections between the contractors and the Republican Party and documents the buying of influence and rigged accounting systems. A must-see film! For detailed information, visit: http://iraqforsale.org/facts.php
8:50 - 9:30 pm VOTERGATE follows a young team on their nationwide investigation of the current problems with our voting systems and elections procedures. Fast-paced and engaging, Votergate reveals the shocking story of how touchscreen voting systems are highly susceptible to hacking and how these systems are being implemented across the country without the proper checks and balances to insure accuracy and accountability.

Friday, April 6
4:30-5:50 pm PEACE, PROPAGANDA AND THE PROMISED LAND (80 minutes) Combining American and British TV news clips with observations of analysts, journalists, and political activists, the film provides a historical overview, a striking media comparison, and an examination of factors that have distorted U.S. media coverage and, in turn, American public opinion.

Monday, April 9
6:00-6:45 PM EDWARD SAID: ON ORIENTALISM In this engaging and lavishly illustrated interview, Said argues that the Western (especially American) understanding of the Middle East as a place full of villains and terrorists ruled by Islamic fundamentalism produces a deeply distorted image of the diversity and complexity of millions of Arab peoples. He unearths the intellectual roots of “Orientalism” in the history of imperial conquest stemming back to the 18th century. It is this legacy of “difference” and mistrust that must be overcome if conflict, discord and violence are not
to be humanity’s permanent future.

7:30-8:00 PM INTERVIEW: ILAN PAPPE Haifa University Professor Ilan Pappe is the academic director of the Research Institute for Peace at Jivad Haviva and writes extensively on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the history of the 1948 war.

Wednesday, April 11
6:30-7:00 PM THE WALL OF SHAME The wall being constructed on the West Bank by the Israeli government is twenty-five feet high. Studded with guard towers and armaments, and encrusted with high-tech sensors, the wall separates Palestinians from their own farms, their own neighbors, and from the Israeli settlements subsidized lavishly by the Israeli government. Alternate Focus cameraman Rodney Devereaux brings us face-to-face with the wall and its implications.

Thursday, April 12, 7:30 - 9:30 pm — MPJC PRESENTS:
7:30 - 8:30 PM Arlington West—Tourists from all over the world come to the Santa Monica Pier. As they descend the steps from the pier's playground, an ever-growing tribute of crosses, set up every Sunday by Veterans for Peace, is there to greet them between the fun zone above and the boundless ocean below. For the living, this film asks, "How could this have happened?" For the dead, it asks, "Why?

8:30 - 9:25 PM A Little Light'll Do Ya: Defending Democracy in America: As the January 6, 2005 deadline for a challenge to the Electoral College vote drew near, a tiny village on the California coast sent a delegation and an award-winning documentary team to Ohio and Washington, D.C. to get the facts. They found overwhelming evidence of a stolen election and a small, diverse group of committed people defending democracy against overwhelming odds. You can view this online at: http://eon.blip.tv/file/75731/

9:25 - 9:30 PM Run to the Rock (also called "O Sinnerman") is a powerful 4-minute montage interweaving the creation of the word "IMPEACH" by 1,000 people at Ocean Beach in San Francisco on January 6, 2007 with images of the US war on Iraq and our "misleaders" who continue to perpetrate it. It can also be seen online at: http://www.ifilm.com/video/2827514
